Love in Advent
Isaiah 7:10-16 NRSVUE
10 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, 11 “Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.” 12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test.” 13 Then Isaiah[a] said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals that you weary my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son and shall name him Immanuel.[b] 15 He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. 16 For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted.

Good day everyone,
This Sunday is the final reflection before Christmas Eve, the last Sunday of Advent. We will together light the Love candle and focus on Isaiah 7:10-16. Over our Advent weeks, you may notice something of a rhythm to our themes. Hope was explicitly described as our future expectation of peace. Peace Sunday explored a new theological revelation that gives us our reason for hope.
Last Sunday, Joy was lifted up as a state of mind that responds to God’s presence. This Sunday, the focus God’s presence and Love through Christmas will be, once again, revealed as a new theological revelation slowly developed after Isaiah 7 was written. By the time of Jesus, it was widely expected that the whole process of love answering the joyless struggles of the world needed to be wrapped in divinity.
All this and more, Sunday, December 21 at NewDay.
Peace,
Zach
