What Are You Thirsty For?
Psalm 63:1-8
1 You, God, are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
where there is no water.
2 I have seen you in the sanctuary
and beheld your power and your glory.
3 Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you.
4 I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.
5 I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
6 On my bed I remember you;
I think of you through the watches of the night.
7 Because you are my help,
I sing in the shadow of your wings.
8 I cling to you;
your right hand upholds me.

What Are You Thirsty For?
On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink."
John 7:37
I watched some of the Olympic races this year. I noticed something unique about the marathon that was different than any of the other running events. Only in the marathon did the runners grab and drink water along the way. I wanted to know why.
I discovered that under extreme conditions (like running a marathon on a hot day) a person can lose, by sweating, over 1.5 liters of water an hour. That means that the fastest runner who can accomplish this race in about two hours will lose over 3 liters of water by the time he finishes the race!
The runners KNOW they NEED to stay hydrated in order to safely finish the race. One runner commented that, “My body is more thirsty than I realize when I’m running. I need to drink all along the way. If I wait until I feel thirsty, I’m already in trouble."
David, who wandered in a desert wilderness for years, understood what true thirst was all about. This Sunday we get to look at what causes a real passion and thirst for God. And… How does God fill us and satisfy us so that we never thirst again for real purpose, security, and peace?
Grateful to journey together with you,
Pastor John
