Our Spiritual Makeover - Finding Strength & Unity in God's Way

1 Peter 1:13-2:3

13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

17 Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemedfrom the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lambwithout blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart. 23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. 24 For,

“All people are like grass,
    and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall,
25     but the word of the Lord endures forever.”

And this is the word that was preached to you.

Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you,
will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.
Philippians 1:6 (NLT)

Have you ever seen that show, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”?
When it first came out in 2003 they looked for people who were experiencing some sort of hardship in their life and were limited in trying to make changes to their fixer upper homes. Each of the families they selected were in need of someone to see the potential in their home and do a massive makeover. It was always remodeling the existing structure when the show first started. You couldn’t help but watch an episode and be moved by the neighbors and friends that showed up to lend a hand.
Like these homes, we all want someone to see the potential in us. We are all in need of some remodeling!

I worked for two summers building homes around the Twin Cities area. A few times I was asked to come and help with remodeling projects for people we met along the way. I soon became known as “John, the Capp Carpenter”. I realized these people were always happy to invite me into their house, show me what was wrong, and ask if I could repair or restore what was messed up. This is the same attitude God is looking for from us when it comes to the work He wants to do in each of us!

This Sunday we continue looking at the life and letter of the Apostle Peter. Jesus made a life-changing difference in Peter because God believed in him more than Peter believed in himself. I'm also excited that we will be hearing testimonies of how God is at work in our Leadership Team candidates each week. This Sunday, Mickey Hofer will be sharing about her walk with the Lord!

Grateful to journey together with you,
Pastor John
