PREPARATION: What Are You Looking For?

Luke 1:76-79

76 “And you, my little son,
will be called the prophet of the Most High,
because you will prepare the way for the Lord.
77 You will tell his people how to find salvation
through forgiveness of their sins.
78 Because of God’s tender mercy,
the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us,
79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
and to guide us to the path of peace.”

“And you, my little son (John the Bapist), will be called the prophet of the Most High, because you will prepare the way for the Lord.
You will tell his people how to find salvation through forgiveness of their sins.
Because of God’s tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death and to guide us to the path of peace.”
Luke 1:76-79

"What are you looking for?", my father asked one day when I was out in his shop. I was not able to describe the tool that would help fix the broken spokes on the tire, but I figured he must have something. He said, "let me take a look at the bike and figure out what you need." He took one look at the front tire of my bike with its twisted rim and broken spokes and asked, "do you think you could fix this yourself?"

Now as an eleven year old boy who had been riding and tinkering with bikes for years, I somehow figured I was capable of restoring it to its original glory. My father quickly commented that it was beyond repair and the only thing that could be done is to replace it with a new one. Once that whole tire got replaced, it only took a short time of riding before I had confidence that the bike would hold up to the demands of riding on the trails around our home.

This confidence that something will withstand the tests it is put through is called, "peace". The assurance I had while riding my bike is like what God wants us to have in his ability to bring us peace. We live in a time where few people can find the peace they are looking for. This is one of the most significant messages the birth of Jesus was intended to give us. This Sunday we have an opportunity to ride along the pathways of peace with Jesus who knows the best direction for our lives!

Grateful to be on the journey with you,
Pastor John
